Martin 1936 Handcraft Committee Alto Saxophone
NB Pre owned commission sale item. Shop collection only.
Made by Martin in Elkhart, Indiana, USA in 1936. Along with King, Conn etc, Martin were one of the greatest saxophone manufacturers in the US, until the late 60s/70s.
This model features what became known as the "Skyline" engraving on account of the cityscape, searchlights and overhead airplane. It's likely this would have been done by hand. The engraving remains very clear, which means any relacquer which may have been done was performed by a professional.
The horn is finished in silver plate and also features a gold wash in the bell, characteristic of many saxes from this era.
This horn plays with a warm, sweet tone and is set up with a light, responsive action. The crook also has the serial number matching the horn.
